Jake Zembiec will have to make even more room on his already crowded trophy shelf.
The Aquinas Institute senior quarterback was named the 2015 All-USA New York State Offensive Player of the Year Wednesday, an honor given by USA Today High School Sports and sponsored by American Family Insurance.
Zembiec, who led Aquinas to a 13-0 season, Class AA state championship and No. 15 ranking in the country by USA Today, previously earned Gatorade state player of the year honors, along with being named Section V player of the year and All-Greater Rochester player of the year by the Democrat and Chronicle.
The Penn State-bound Zembiec was joined on the All-USA New York first team by teammate Earnest Edwards, a senior wide receiver. Aquinas linebacker Jamir Jones was named second team defense. Earning second team offense recognition was Pittsford running back Josh Mack.
The 6-3, 210-pound Zembiec, who also led Aquinas to a state title as a sophomore, set Section V single-season records by completing 184 of 269 passes for 3,007 yards and 37 touchdowns. His 6,375 yards and 76 touchdowns for his career are also sectional records.
The dynamic Edwards was an offensive and defensive powerhouse at receiver and defensive back for the Little Irish. The 5-10 senior, who is weighing offers from the University of Buffalo and University of Massachusetts, accounted for 28 touchdowns receiving and rushing as well as on kickoff, interception and fumble returns. As Zembiec’s top target, Edwards caught 56 passes for 1,184 yards and 19 TDs.
The 6-3, 235-pound Jones, who is headed to Notre Dame, anchored Aquinas’ defense with 98 tackles, 23 tackles for losses, seven sacks and one interception. He also contributed 43 catches for 852 yards and nine touchdowns receiving.
Mack, who attends Pittsford Sutherland, rushed for 1,245 yards and 25 touchdowns on just 112 carries for a scintillating 11.1 yards-per-carry average. The 6-1, 200-pound senior finished with 50 career touchdowns. He’s considering Maine and Texas-El Paso.
