Add another accolade to Jake Zembiec’s impressive résumé.

The record-setting quarterback for newly crowned Class AA state champion Aquinas Institute was named New York State’s top player via the Gatorade State Player of the Year program, announced Thursday by USA Today. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior, who is planning to head early to Penn State next month, powered the Little Irish to unbeaten season (13-0) and second state crown in the past three years. He was also named the state’s top player by the New York State Sportswriters Association as a sophomore and the 2013 All-Greater Rochester Player of the Year.

There are occasions when the area’s top high school athletes face one another in a pool, on a field, court or course.

The results go up on a scoreboard or in a scorecard.

Sometimes curiosity remains among athletes like Brockport sophomore Cory Gross Jr. or Honeoye Falls-Lima senior Jackson Tate. How strong was that linebacker who tried to body slam me to the turf? How fast was that runner I was in an uphill race with?

University of Rochester Medicine Sports Medicine can provide answers for Gross, Tate and 40 other Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester fall sport athletes who took part in a sports performance combine Saturday. The Rochester-region’s top high school swimmers, cross country runners, golfers, tennis, field hockey, football, soccer and volleyball players were invited to show what they can do inside on Pinnacle Athletic Campus in Victor, at no charge.

“I’m a nordic skier (at HF-L) so our practices have been pretty brutal as of late,” Tate said. “I was kind of looking to do something a little different.

“There was some free stuff (for the athletes) involved, it was a great way to see how I matched up against some other kids in Section V, and it was a fun way to spend a Saturday morning. My fun is different than others’ “

Different indeed. Tate, a cross country runner at HF-L since he was in the eighth grade, moved with other boys and girls to stations around the 135,000-square-foot facility, where they were asked to perform a vertical jump, dash 40 yards, hustle through an agility test or have the strength of their grip measured.

Some of the testing appeared to be more sophisticated, such as biometric screening. Members of the UR Medicine Sports Medicine staff wrote down and typed the results.

“I had a general idea (of what to expect),” Tate said. “I came in, registered and did a warm-up, which was appreciated. Then, it felt a little intense when you walked in. You have this whole spread (of stations) in front of you, and there’s some big guys out there.

“It ended up being kind of fun.”

There also was a bench press, a station to determine the amount of range in someone’s shoulders, a chest put with a medicine ball and the tests of all these tests, a 300-yard run – done twice with a five-minute break in between.

“They saved the best for last, the 300-yard shuttle,” Tate said. “The bench press was pretty pitiful for most of us cross country guys, but there’s only so much you can do over there. Overall, it was kind of neat.

“I used to be a big NFL fan when I was little, so you can say ‘Oh yeah, I did that, I understand how hard that is.’ ”’

Jeremy Peters, a physical therapist with UR Medicine measures the range of motion of an athlete during the AGR Sports Combine.

Jeremy Peters, a physical therapist with UR Medicine measures the range of motion of an athlete during the AGR Sports Combine.

All of the athletes have a profile that contains their data and can be accessed on the Internet with a password.

“It also ranks them compared to national or regional norms,”  UR Medicine Sports Medicine director of rehabilitation services Kostantinos Vasalos said. “So they can see I’m in the 10th percentile of this, but I’m in the 50th percentile or 100th percentile for this, so they can identify what their strengths and their weaknesses are and take the next corrective measure.”

Comparing the bench press results of Tate, who has committed to run at SUNY Geneseo, with Gross, a football running back and defensive back, may not do much good for either. The same goes for 5 foot-4 inch, 105-pound McQuaid junior cross country runner Joe Doerr and 210-pound Penfield senior linebacker Jack Hartnett, but the test data can have another use.

“Like other combines that people may be familiar with, we are looking at things like speed, power and agility,”  Vasalos said. “What makes our combines unique is we have a whole host of injury preventive screenings, too.

“So we look at range of motion, coordination muscle control, balance, things that put kids at risk for sports injury. We’re passionate about keeping our athletes healthy and enhancing their performance. These combines have become a great tool for us to blend the two of those things, where we can give athletes great data on how they are performing athletically and we can inform them on any potential risk factors they have, so they can take action, correct them and keep themselves in the game longer.”

It was the combination of a growth spurt and injury that cut the first varsity season of football for Gross very short at Brockport, when he was a freshman. This fall went a lot better for Gross and a Brockport team that became a Section V champion for the first time. There were still bumps and bruises to deal with in a tough sport, so the data from the combine also peaked the interest of Cory Gross Sr. and Deatie Cherry, Cory’s parents.

“He played through a hip injury, hand injury, everything this season,” Cherry said. “He’s been to ‘Strong Ortho’ quite a few times the past football season. We’ve been through the worst.”

City school sports combine held at East High School

Now the Gross family can use the information as a starting point in the future, to see how much Cory Gross Jr. has really healed and improved. The information can also be passed along to recruiters for college teams. Recruiters have been known to share this type of information with colleagues and friends in their sports, if a recruit may not be a fit for their team.

Morgan Bronstein, a sophomore at Pittsford Sutherland, belongs on the AGR girls golf team after her first-place finish in the Monroe County league’s Tournament of Champions and earning a second trip to the state championships. Bronstein’s sport of choice however, is hockey. She skates with the Pittsford JV.

“I think it’s just good to see overall how you’re doing and do a little bit of everything,” Bronstein said. “I can push myself a lot and do things that I didn’t think I can do. I’ve gotten a lot better, like the running.

“I did it (at a national hockey camp last summer) and I thought I did a lot better this time. It’ll be cool to see how I compare and I know that they can compare me to people around the country, so it’ll be cool to see where I fall.”

Take a look back at the 1984 All-Greater Rochester football team.

High school football fans, we are not Hall and Oates or  “Out of Touch” (which BTW was the Billboard’s No. 1 song the week of Dec. 15, 1984), but we do have a TBT for you.

Check out this gallery of the 1984 AGR Football Team.

Three members of the ’84 squad have been inducted into the Section V Football Hall of Fame: Cornelius Southall and Bill Scharr are members of the class of 2000, and Bert Pangrazio was selected in 2008.

The 2015 version will be posted on Friday (along with our 10 other fall sports teams) and we will also have a 20-page AGR Special Section in print tomorrow.

The Rainbow Classic isn’t just a boys and girls basketball doubleheader between town rivals Pittsford Mendon and Pittsford Sutherland. It’s part ear-splitting pep rally, part border war and probably the biggest fund-raiser pulled off every year by one school district in Section V.

“It’s awe-inspiring,” Brian Pasley said Friday night at the University of Rochester’s Palestra, where a $33,000 check was presented to Golisano Children’s Hospital to bump the event’s 15-year donation total to just over $400,000.

It’s played in memory of Pasley’s daughter, Katelyn, who died just one month after being diagnosed with leukemia in 2000. She was 8 years old. It also honors Ryan McCluski, a Sutherland graduate who was 20 in 2004 when he died due to complications from a neuromuscular disease that made even walking difficult.

“We went to hospital on Wednesday, just to see the lounge and all the different activities provided for the families and the children who are sick,” Mendon senior point guard Abbey Leon said. “To know we impacted that is just a really great feeling.”

On the court, the rivals split. The Mendon girls and Sutherland boys each built 19-point leads after three quarters and won. Mendon, whose lead was trimmed to seven, won 56-46. The Sutherland won 61-41, but emotions ran hot in the boys game after a hard foul late when Josh Mack, the Knights’ star running back in football, was going in for a dunk.

“It’s unbelievable. The energy in the gym, even when the kids come out for warm-ups, you just can’t match it,” said 16th-year Sutherland boys coach, John Nally. “There’s very few athletes and coaches that get to play in atmosphere like that. We’ve been down to Blue Cross (Arena at the War Memorial) and it’s fun, but that fails in comparison.”

The boys game marked the first matchup between Nally, 41, and his brother and former assistant, Bob, 38, who is in his first season as Mendon’s head coach. Bob was John’s assistant for all 16 of his seasons and their players went at each other like sibling rivals.

Just as it always is, the Palestra was rollicking. Most of the reason for that is each school’s student section, Sutherland’s SuperFans and the Mendon Madness. Each group cheers in unison, one chant being answered across the gym by another. Think Cameron Indoor Stadium at Duke University, just smaller. The Palestra’s capacity is about 1,800 and the acoustics make it deafening.

“I’m going to steal a phrase that Sports Illustrated used to describe the Ithaca-Cortland football game when they called it the “greatest little game in the nation,” said Pittsford’s 16th-year athletic director, Scott Barker. “I would venture to say that there isn’t an atmosphere better in the country for a high school girls and boys basketball game than here tonight.”

It’s not just the players, either. The cheerleaders donated $9,000 from revenue generated selling advertising the game program. About $16,000 comes from ticket revenue ($10 per seat). Art students also donate their time and work for murals that decorate a new lobby and teen lounge at the hospital.

“I think it’s important that our students learn about community service and what it’s like to give back,” said Kim McCluski, Ryan’s mother. “When they learn it young, they’ll remember it their whole lives and they will make a difference.”

Katelyn Pasley’s fondness for rainbows gave the night its name.

“It’s kind of the perfect storm. You’ve got great families. You’ve got a great community that supports this stuff and it’s a legacy now,” Mendon girls basketball coach Todd Julien said. “Year after year we sell this place out. Everybody’s committed to it, dollars continue to roll in and I’m just proud to be a small part of it.”

Aquinas receiver Earnest Edwards, shown here in the Class AA state title game, caught five passes for 286 yards and was named MVP on Nov. 29.

We do A LOT for Fall All-Greater Rochester — our massive 163-athlete/11-sport section that included athletes from 36 different schools — but we don’t have a Plays of the Season — yet. MaxPreps, however, does have a Top 10 Football Plays of the Year and a 67-yard catch and run for a touchdown by Earnest Edwards made the list.

The senior wide receiver for Aquinas made at least six would-be tacklers miss during a 67-yard juke-and-jive-then-dash play during the Nov. 29 Class AA state title game, a 44-19 rout by the Little Irish of Saratoga Springs for the state-record seventh championship and second in the last three years. Edwards had a day, all right, catching five balls for 286 yards from quarterback Jake Zembiec. Three of them went for TDs and he also ran for one.

Here’s a link to VIDEO OF THE RUN.
