The best high school basketball player in the greater Rochester region is Anthony Lamb, a forward at Greece Athena.

The best high school basketball team in the greater Rochester region so far, is Fairport.

Section V Class AA runner-ups each of the last two seasons, the Fairport Red Raiders won a matchup of undefeated Monroe County league teams Tuesday night at Greece Athena, 82-69.

“It has a lot of impact on us,” Fairport guard Matthew Keenan said. “Every time we’ve played Greece Athena the last three, four years maybe, we’ve lost by a big deficit or it was a close game.

“So yeah, this win is huge for us. We really wanted to beat Greece Athena at Greece Athena.”

Keenan, a 6-foot-3 senior, scored 31 points, a personal-high for him as a varsity player. A league all-star last season, Keenan made four 3-pointers and also finished with six rebounds. Dan Masino, a junior guard who was a member of the Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester boys basketball first team last season, finished with 20 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

Athena's Patrick Meisenzahl (12) is called for the blocking foul as Fairport's Matthew Keenan drives to the basket.

Athena’s Patrick Meisenzahl (12) is called for the blocking foul as Fairport’s Matthew Keenan drives to the basket.

Fairport, off to a 7-0 start, is the top-ranked team in the Democrat and Chronicle Section V Large-School Boys Basketball Coaches Poll and looked fairly sharp to the layman. Scott Fitch, the team’s coach, would’ve liked to have seen a stronger finish and Keenan called it the team’s worst defensive effort so far.

Who needs a warning about getting carried away with early success with that type of self-evaluation?

“I just think there are things that we usually do that we didn’t do this game, at the end of it and defensively,” Fitch said. “We just didn’t play smart, a lot of times. Typically, I feel we’re pretty good at that. We have room to improve, so that’s good. We’ll go back to work.over the break.

“We shot it well. I mean, we did do some things well, for sure. (The Trojans) are a very good team. I think we have room to improve, I’ll say that.”

Roth: Fairport’s Dan Masino is from famed hoops family

Lamb, a 6-6 senior who has given a verbal commitment to play at University of Vermont, scored 24 points. He was voted the AGR Player of the Year by coaches at the end of last season, after Greece Athena advanced to the Class A state tournament final. Trevor Layne, a senior guard and one of the new faces in the Athena starting lineup, was the team’s leading scorer on this night, with 25 points.

We really wanted to beat Greece Athena at Greece Athena.
Matthew Keenan, Fairport

With a 6-1 record, Greece Athena coach Jim Johnson was able to smile after the first bump in the road this season for the Trojans .

“We’re getting better,” Johnson said in-between bites of pizza. “We have a terrific player, and we don’t have anybody else who played when games were on the line. We have some good young kids who are going to get better. I’m very optimistic. One of the reasons why I’ve always scheduled tough non-league (and non-division) games is so I can see and know (by the postseason). I think we’ll been fine.

“To Fairport’s credit, I thought that they were very good, even better than I thought. What they really did well was share the ball and other guys made shots.”

Fairport junior forward Cam Keeley finished with 12 points. He was one of six players who made at least one 3-pointer.

WHITE PLAINS – As various members of Penfield’s girls basketball team pulled down one rebound after another at the Westchester County Center on Monday, it gave Ursuline a crash course in the age-old sports adage, “You can’t teach height.”

Penfield beat Ursuline 57-42 in a Slam Dunk Tournament semifinal at the Westchester County Center Dec. 28, 2015.

Penfield beat Ursuline 57-42 in a Slam Dunk Tournament semifinal at the Westchester County Center Dec. 28, 2015.

Penfield, the 15th-ranked Class AA team in the state from suburban Rochester, owned the Koalas in the paint on both ends of the court during its 57-42 win in the semifinals of the 17th annual Slam Dunk Tournament.

“It was a tough game, definitely,” Ursuline junior forward Katie McLoughlin said. “Our opponents were very strong. They’re a big team, so it’s hard to adjust. If we (had) gotten more of a rhythm earlier in the game, it would’ve helped us in the end of the game.”

McLoughlin paced the Koalas with 14 points and six rebounds, shooting 6-of-12 from the field. The rest of the team shot just 11-for-42 in the loss.

Penfield, last year’s Section V runner-up, out-rebounded Ursuline 50-26 in the win, and took all but nine of its 52 shots from the field inside of the arc.

Boston College-bound forward Emma Guy used her 6-foot-3 frame to dominate for 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Patriots. Makaila Wilson, a 5-foot-11 sophomore guard, also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Ursuline started to find its stride in the fourth quarter, but by then Penfield had built an insurmountable lead.

“If we came out like that every single quarter, it would’ve been a much closer game,” Koalas junior guard Korina Guerra said. “I love playing against good competition — it only makes you better.”

Guerra, who committed to Sacred Heart in November, said that playing a strong opponent at the County Center will serve the team well in its pursuit of returning to “Westchester’s Most Famous Arena” for the Section 1 championships in late-February.

“We’re excited to play here because we expect our team to be back here fighting for the gold ball,” she said. “Playing here, getting everyone comfortable, playing against good competition — it can only help us.”

Penfield will play Peekskill for the Slam Dunk championship Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. Ursuline will play Monroe-Woodbury, the reigning Section 9 Class AA champs, in the consolation at 3:30 p.m.

When former Spencerport wrestling coach Bill Jacoutot invited Rush-Henrietta to the Teike-Bernabi Wrestling Tournament years ago, the Royal Comets were less than world-beaters, not exactly contenders to win the event.

“He told me if you want to get better, you have to have competition,” R-H wrestling coach Mickey Marlowe said.

“You have to come here (these days), there are teams from all over the state.’’

More than 20 years later, the Royal Comets are history-makers.

Rush-Henrietta finished on top of the Teike-Bernabi tournament team standings for the first time Wednesday night with 329 points in the 50th edition of the event, 10.5 more than three-time defending champion Shenendehowa, a power from Section II or Albany-region.

“It’s definitely an honor to be a part of the 50 teams (that have won,” R-H 195-pound wrestler Jesse Trout said. “I don’t think that we’ve won this tournament before. To be able to say that I was part of the team to do it, that is pretty big.

“It’s a very prestigious tournament. To be able to say that your team won the Spencerport Teike-Bernabi Tournament, that’s a pretty big deal around here.”

Rush-Henrietta’s Austin Kassel at 120 pounds,152-pounder Justin Klein and Trout won their weight classes. Klein’s 4-2 victory over Tristan Almeter of Iroquois in Section VI or Buffalo-region, made him a three-time champion at this tournament.

“I’m really happy and proud of my team,” Klein said. “Last year, we lost a lot of guys (to graduation), so I don’t think we expected to prove that we are good.

“I wasn’t going to get my hopes up, because Shenendehowa is a good team. So is Spencerport. We led in Day 1 and we were still doing well (Wednesday). It was back and forth between us and Shenendehowa.”

Spencerport placed third, after Kyle Pittman defeated Shenendehowa’s Anthony DiNallo, 5-4 in the 160 final. The 182 final was not as competitive. National High School Coaches Association and Flowrestling All-American Kevin Parker of Shenendehowa pinned Lockport’s Mike Daskavitz in 3:28. Parker pinned five opponents in a total of 4:59.

Irondequoit 285-pound senior Cameron Rohr, who finished third last year during his debut at the state championships, was named one of the tournament’s most outstanding wrestlers. Rohr put a end to his weight division’s final when he pinned Lancaster’s Mason Mastrangelo in 54 seconds.

A two-time Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Football lineman, Rohr won the Monroe County league championship last week, after finishing second the previous two years. He is 17-0 this season.

“’I’ve wrestled since the second grade,’’ Rohr said. “I wrestle good kids all of the time.’’

In other words, Rohr was nowhere near rattled while in the spotlight.

The Royal Comets handled themselves well, too.

“I’ve been coming here probably longer than anyone in this building,’’ Marlowe said. “We’ve been around awhile, coming to this thing for a long time. You know, we’ve had years where we were happy to get a top-five.

“I was kind of surprised. They just wrestled really hard. Three seniors showed up in the finals and locked it up. That was a good feeling.”

Zembiec grabs another state honor

Jake Zembiec will have to make even more room on his already crowded trophy shelf.

The Aquinas Institute senior quarterback was named the 2015 All-USA New York State Offensive Player of the Year Wednesday, an honor given by USA Today High School Sports and sponsored by American Family Insurance.

Zembiec, who led Aquinas to a 13-0 season, Class AA state championship and No. 15 ranking in the country by USA Today, previously earned Gatorade state player of the year honors, along with being named Section V player of the year and All-Greater Rochester player of the year by the Democrat and Chronicle.

The Penn State-bound Zembiec was joined on the All-USA New York first team by teammate Earnest Edwards, a senior wide receiver. Aquinas linebacker Jamir Jones was named second team defense. Earning second team offense recognition was Pittsford running back Josh Mack.

The 6-3, 210-pound Zembiec, who also led Aquinas to a state title as a sophomore, set Section V single-season records by completing 184 of 269 passes for 3,007 yards and 37 touchdowns. His 6,375 yards and 76 touchdowns for his career are also sectional records.

The dynamic Edwards was an offensive and defensive powerhouse at receiver and defensive back for the Little Irish. The 5-10 senior, who is weighing offers from the University of Buffalo and University of Massachusetts, accounted for 28 touchdowns receiving and rushing as well as on kickoff, interception and fumble returns.  As Zembiec’s top target, Edwards caught 56 passes for 1,184 yards and 19 TDs.

The 6-3, 235-pound Jones, who is headed to Notre Dame, anchored Aquinas’ defense with 98 tackles, 23 tackles for losses, seven sacks and one interception. He also contributed 43 catches for 852 yards and nine touchdowns receiving.

Mack, who attends Pittsford Sutherland, rushed for 1,245 yards and 25 touchdowns on just 112 carries for a scintillating 11.1 yards-per-carry average. The 6-1, 200-pound senior finished with 50 career touchdowns. He’s considering Maine and Texas-El Paso.

We do A LOT for Fall All-Greater Rochester — our massive 163-athlete/11-sport section that included athletes from 36 different schools — but we don’t have a Plays of the Season — yet. MaxPreps, however, does have a Top 10 Football Plays of the Year and a 67-yard catch and run for a touchdown by Earnest Edwards made the list.

The senior wide receiver for Aquinas made at least six would-be tacklers miss during a 67-yard juke-and-jive-then-dash play during the Nov. 29 Class AA state title game, a 44-19 rout by the Little Irish of Saratoga Springs for the state-record seventh championship and second in the last three years. Edwards had a day, all right, catching five balls for 286 yards from quarterback Jake Zembiec. Three of them went for TDs and he also ran for one.
